What are Dang Gui's Benefits?
Here below are 14 tips of Dang Gui's health benefits,
Inhibition of tumor growth and metastasis mainly through the inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase activity, promotion of apoptosis, inhibition of angiogenesis, and reduction in cyclooxygenase-2 expression.
2. Protection against Heart Diseases
Dang Gui helps to improve coronary blood flow and prevent thrombosis, thus lowering the risk of atherosclerosis. It also decreases blood LDL levels and improves blood lipid profile by inhibiting the cholesterol synthesis in liver cells.
3. Lower Cholesterol
Dang Gui can significantly decrease serum triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (T-CHO) while increasing HDL-C levels in hyperlipidemia rats.
4. Lower Blood Pressure
Dang Gui can lower blood pressure through the inhibition of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). It acts on both tissues and central components, thus leading to systemic vasodilation which will decrease peripheral resistance and reduce blood pressure.
Dang Gui is rich in various compounds such as phthalides, angelic acid, and so on, which can scavenge free radicals and inhibit lipid peroxidation. It also enhances the antioxidant capacity of erythrocytes, thus decreasing oxidative stress in humans.
Dang Gui can inhibit the activity of cyclooxygenase (COX) and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO). It also inhibits inflammatory cytokines (such as TNFα, IL1β, and so on) production by macrophages, thus exerting an anti-inflammatory effect.
7. Anti-Bacterial and Anti-Viral
Dang Gui can effectively decrease the secretion of monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1) by blood leukocytes, thus suppressing their infiltration into inflamed tissues to alleviate inflammation. Dang Gui also has anti-bacterial and anti-viral effects, especially against infections of the respiratory system.
8. Enhance the Immune System
Dang Gui can enhance immune function by increasing blood levels of IgG, IgM, and so on. It also exhibits a good inhibitory effect on autoimmune diseases such as experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) and experimental adjuvant-induced arthritis.
9. Liver Protection
Dang Gui can effectively improve liver function, decrease lipid deposition in hepatocytes, alleviate oxidative stress and inhibit apoptosis of hepatocytes. It also decreases the content of serum enzymes such as GOT and GPT which are induced by carbon tetrachloride.
10. Wound Healing
Dang Gui speeds up the repair process of injured tissues and improves wound healing. It can also alleviate pain due to its strong anti-inflammatory effect.
11. Promote Bone Formation and Regulate Bone Metabolism
Dang Gui can effectively improve bone metabolism by increasing calcium levels in serum. It also stimulates osteoblast proliferation and differentiation, thus stimulating the synthesis of type I collagen which is required for bone formation.
12. Cardioprotective Effect
Dang Gui has a cardioprotective effect through its antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory effects, and antioxidation.
13. Protect against Fat-Induced Insulin Resistance and Diabetes
Dang Gui can effectively decrease blood glucose levels, alleviate insulin resistance and increase insulin sensitivity in diabetic rats. It also improves lipid metabolism by decreasing the content of TG, TC, and LDL-C in serum; thus alleviating fat-induced insulin resistance.
Dang Gui can inhibit the activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) to enhance memory and protect nerve cells from oxidative damage in senile mice, which contributes to its anti-aging effect.
