What is He Shou Wu?
He Shou Wu, also known as Fo-Ti, is an extract from a plant that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for hundreds, if not thousands of years. He Shou Wu stimulates the immune system and helps the body to produce more red blood cells. It also encourages hair growth and helps to prevent hair loss. The Chinese name He Shou Wu literally translates to “Mr. He’s Black Hair”. He Shou Wu is also used as a powerful antioxidant that helps to protect the body from free radical damage. It is often used to promote general wellness and can be used to treat a number of illnesses as a result.
What are the health benefits of He Shou Wu?
He Shou Wu can help with a number of ailments including baldness, grey hair, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, fatigue, and poor memory. It has also been used to treat diabetes mellitus type 2. Amongst other things He Shou Wu is known as “The Elixir of Life” or the “Ming Men pill”.
How does He Shou Wu affect hair growth?
He Shou Wu is an excellent herb for boosting hair growth. Its primary actions on the body are to invigorate blood and enrich the yin. While it's often found in combination with herbs like Fo-Ti, He Shou Wu can be taken alone (though you may find better results adding some Fo-Ti into your daily regime).
He Shou Wu not only stimulates blood flow to the scalp but also nourishes the hair follicles. This means that it can help existing strands of hair grow longer and stronger. It is often taken by men with baldness or thinning hair for this purpose.
The herb's growth-promoting effect is likely related to its ability to control the sex hormones estradiol and testosterone. The former is known to cause baldness in males (and, at high levels, females), while the latter can trigger excessive hair growth in men and women alike.
How to make He Shou Wu tea?
The traditional way of brewing He Shou Wu tea is to soak the root in boiling water for about 5-10 minutes. For a more modern, simplified method, you can also make a tincture of the root. In this method, you will want to soak He Shou Wu root in a glass jar with a tight lid in 80 proof vodka or grain alcohol for at least a week.
Side Effects of He Shou Wu
Caution He Shou Wu should not be taken during pregnancy or by people with high blood pressure.
He Shou Wu is likely safe when used orally for up to 6 months. However, taking it in higher doses for much longer can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
He Shou Wu has few known side effects, however, there are some reported cases of gastrointestinal discomfort. It should also not be taken during pregnancy or if you suffer from high blood pressure.
How much He Shou Wu should be taken daily?
He Shou Wu is traditionally taken by the tablespoon, three times daily. Make sure to shake the jar once or twice a day to keep the tincture well mixed. Strain the liquid and pour it into a dark glass bottle. You can take a dropper full (about 4-5 drops) of this tincture three times a day to get the benefits of He Shou Wu.
