What Is Tartary Buckwheat -Ku Qiao?

Tartary buckwheat tea is a drink made by screening and baking the seeds of Tartary buckwheat. Tartary buckwheat is scientifically known as F. tataricum, and its subspecies are black Tartary buckwheat and common Tartary buckwheat. A common Tartary buckwheat has a yellowish-white shell, while a black Tartary buckwheat is known as the "black pearl". This tea is a fried rice tea.

As a domesticated food plant, Fagopyrum tataricum is called Tartary buckwheat, Indian buckwheat, Indian wheat, green buckwheat, or bitter buckwheat. A species of the same genus, common buckwheat, is also regarded as a cereal. However, unlike true cereals, it does not belong to the grass family. Thus, it is not related to wheat. Tartary buckwheat is bitter, but it contains more rutin than common buckwheat. It also contains quercitrin.

It is common in the Himalayan region today, as well as other areas in Southwest China such as Guizhou province, and was domesticated in east Asia.

How To Make Buckwheat Tea?

Take one spoon of Bitter Buckwheat tea (about 5-12g depending on your flavor) and place it into a glass cup. Pour boiling water (about 95 to 100°C). Steep for about 3 to 5 minutes then serve.
